Figures

Figures are generally in white metal or in resin. At times the kits may be in resin, with some white metal parts. All figures come in small parts and required assembly and painting. Some clean-up may be required to remove mold lines. Please refer to our Tutorials section for more help in this regard.

Busts

Busts are generally in resin, but some smaller scale busts are also produced in white metal. Busts are generally composed of the main torso with additional parts, like helmets, weapons, pipe and other accessories. These can be in resin or white metal, depending on the manufacturer. Some busts also have a pedestal. All busts require assembly and painting, with some minor clean-up. Please refer to our Tutorials section for more info.

Scales

All figures and busts come in various scales and sizes. Some are presented in mm scale, while others are presented in a ratio (such as 1:10). Unfortunately there is not one standard true scale and these differ from one manufacturer to another. Figure sizes are generally taken from the base of the foot to the eyes, be they 54mm, 75mm or 120mm scale or any other. Busts also come in scales ranging from 200mm or in ratios like 1:9, 1:10, 1:12. Again, sizes do vary between manufacturers though the differences, in most instances, are not that significant.

Materials

Figures and busts are presented generally in white metal or resin, or a combination of both.

White metal is generally an alloy of white metals. It can be polished, filed, sanded, drilled, etc. Clean-up would be necessary to remove mold-lines, etc.

Good quality resin kits generally require less clean-up, except for the occasional mold-line and flash. Resin can also be sanded and drilled, though exercise caution as resin produces a very fine dust which should not be inhaled.

Paints and brushes

Each modeller will have their preferred paintbrushes and paints, be these oils or acrylics. Busts and figures are generally painted in oils or acrylic paints, or a combination of both. We offer a range of acrylic paints produced by Acrylicos Vallejo. The paintbrushes we stock are hand-made by Rosemary & Co. These are all Sable brushes in various sizes and with different brush tips to suit all painting styles.

Modelling Putties

There are various modelling putties available, for which there are various uses in the hobby: to sculpt masters, to fill in gaps, create groundwork or convert kits.

We stock Magic Sculp, which is a two-part epoxy putty - a hardener and a resin - to be mixed in equal parts. This takes about 2 hours to air-dry (depending on room temperature). Once hard it can be sanded, carved, filed, etc.

The other choice is ProCreate, another two-part epoxy putty, which can be used to sculpt finer details. It is ideal for smaller figures (28-32mm) and allows for more flexibility taking about an hour to air-dry.

Finally we have Stick Putty to create armature and larger scale projects. This dries rock hard in a matter of seconds. It is ONLY suitable to bulk out armature, before applying Magic Sculp or ProCreate.

Each putty has its own unique qualities and each modeller has to find the right blend to suit their needs. Magic Sculp and ProCreate can be mixed together to create an excellent sculpting medium.
