Man's nature is to build a home to protect his family and possessions against all perils of life. American pioneers used all kind of materials to construct their first hut in their new country. So a wide range of recycled parts, e.g. boxes and canvas, were given a new use. From time to time new parts were added and the home grew continuously to create the spirit of the US pioneers.

The USA has a rich history of travel by inland waterways. Before railroads, America's rivers were its arteries of transportation. These waterways include both natural rivers and manmade canals. The Hudson River attracted some of the earliest colonists, the Ohio River was a highway for settlement of its valley and the lower Mississippi, up the Missouri went Lewis and Clark on their 'voyage of discov. Settlers who survived the Oregon Trail found their land along the Columbia River. Flatboats were often used by pioneers to bring furniture, tools, farm animals and other essential items, only to be taken apart at their final destination, with the lumber used to build a house. The crew would have often walked or ridden back home, later travelling upstream by steamboats. At the end of their era flatboats often were converted into living quarters.
