During the American Revolutionary War, the British relied heavily upon some loyalist provincial units raised on the field. That made special sense, considering their knowledge of the terrain and the local background.

This was the case of the Butler’s Rangers, raised by John Butler, a veteran from the Franco-Indian Wars. The regiment was mostly comprised of Loyalist refugees that had fled to Canada after the outbreak of the revolt of the American colonies and were allowed to form as a regiment after distinguishing themselves at the Battle of Saratoga, in 1777.

This regiment was conceived as an auxiliary force of light infantry for special operations and guerilla warfare. Their alleged involvement in the Wyoming Valley and Cherry Valley massacres earned them a ruthless reputation among the rest of the troops.

After the war ended, the regiment was demobilized and settled in the Niagara region in Ontario, Canada.
