The Middle Ages in the Iberian Peninsula were greatly influenced by the Moorish invasion of 711 and the posterior 800 years-long processes of conquest towards the South by the northern Christian kingdoms that we call “La Reconquista”.
During that long period, the main occupation of the Christian nobleman was to wage war on their Arab neighbors and sometimes among themselves. Territories and loyalties changed hands several times and the progress of the war was slow at the beginning and faster in the later stages.
One of the main turning points of this process was the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, where an alliance of the Christian armies, along with the Militant Orders and volunteers from other European Kingdoms as France, England, and Portugal, defeated the forces of the Almohad Caliph Muhammad-an-Nasir in an epic battle that, in the long run, sealed the fate of the Islamic kingdoms of Spain.
Our figure, a classic Elite Miniaturas reference sculpted by Mike Blank depicts a Spanish knight at the service of the Templars, one of the many military orders that served in the permanent crusade that was the Reconquista.
