The Vikings were a Northern European folk of Germanic origin that lived in the area that today is Scandinavia. Raiders and traders, their highly developed seafaring skills allowed them to navigate all the seas and main rivers of Western Europe, influencing greatly in the destiny of several nations like Great Britain or France in what became known as “The Viking Era”.

One of the first parts they started visiting very early in this period was the Northern lands of England, where they even established the Kingdom of Jórvík, centered in the old city that is the actual York, at the expense of the previous Kingdom of Northumbria. The chronicles of this period are somewhat obscure, but it seems that the start of this Norse kingdom dates from 865 when the Great Heathen Army commanded by the sons of Ragnar Lodbrok invaded England from the North.

One of its commanders was Ragnar’s son, the so-called Ivar the Boneless. According to the sagas, he was the victim of a curse that made him suffer from weak bones, but it is more likely that his nickname evolved from the Latin Exosus, which would translate as “the Hated”.

For our bust we have tried to depict a ruthless and characterful Viking war chief, holding a characteristic helmet with protective mask and wearing a pelt cape made with the hide of one of the long-haired cows of the area.
