One of the heavier classes of gladiators, the Murmillo or “fish man” sported a full helmet adorned with a tall crest resembling a large fin. He was armed with the gladius, scutum romanum (roman shield), manica (armour covering the sword arm) and a greave on the left leg. His traditional foe was the Thraex class of gladiator.
