Matthieu de Clermont, Defender of Acre. As the last great Crusader stronghold in the Holy Land fell around him.
Marshal of the Knights Hospitaller, Matthieu de Clermont played a pivotal role during the Siege of Acre in 1291. Contemporary accounts describe him leading desperate counterattacks through the city's streets and defending the walls against overwhelming Mamluk forces. His courage during the final hours of the Crusader Kingdom has made him one of the enduring symbols of the military orders' determination in the face of impossible odds.
This sculpt captures Matthieu during the defense of Acre, inspired by the famous painting depicting him rallying the city's defenders atop the battered walls. His banner flies behind him as he prepares to meet the next assault, refusing to yield even as the city collapses around him.
