“El Monte de las Ánimas” (The Mount of the Spirits), is a classic horror story from Spanish literature. The author, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, is one of the most prominent poets and writers of the Spanish Post-romanticism and made an extensive compiling work of old tales and legends from Castille and Aragon regions.
This story is a classic gothic horror tale, which starts with a young couple on a hunting party. Alonso explains his cousin Beatriz that a distant ruined chapel they see in mount used to belong to the Templar knights, that came to the area during the “Reconquista”. Their rivalry with the local nobility ended in bloodshed and the area is considered haunted since that day.
Later on, Beatriz realises that, while on the mount, she lost a badge that Alonso gave to her as a token of affection. Her cousin decides not to wait untill dawn and goes back to retrieve the badge in the middle of the night…
