The burgomaster had turned out to be a much more elusive contract than expected. The chase had taken her from the tall spires and rooftops of Konozova to the dome-topped villas of the satraps of Akdava in the east. The exotic location at the banks of the river Ivris was a dreamy landscape where it was difficult to imagine any potential threat but, at the same time, she knew that the security measures of the apparently placid residence of Afshin Bayat were worthy of the most secure banks in the business district of Dangarnon.
How it was possible that this small and fat man had managed to keep himself alive for so long? Eryet wasn’t even the first member of the guild sent to kill him. Both Orsus, the Hand of Fate, and Getnarel, the Mask of Sorrow, had failed and died in the attempt. Their tombs in the catacombs of the guild had an impressive record of completed contracts, with the names of the preys killed shinning in gold letters.
As usual, the tombs were ready to receive the assassin from the very moment of his admittance in the guild, and the slabs were carefully updated with the names of the preys even while the agent was away in a contract. Once the prey had been slain, its engraved name was gilded as recognition of the killer’s ability. But if the assassin died before accomplishing the contract, tradition dictated that the name of the prey was to be left unfinished.
Orsus and Getnarel had been her mentors and friends, so she had been obsessed with this contract since she got the assignment. During the months she had been chasing her pray, Eryet used to have the same recurring dream where she was standing by the tombs of her comrades and her view drifted, slowly but unstoppable, to the last name left to be gilded in their slabs. Ibrahim Storch.
When the prey was smart, had money, connections, and an impressive corruption record, he didn’t need to be particularly able to defend himself, as he could always use what the members of the guild called the “hide and hire” tactic.
Storch surely thought that he was safe for now, surrounded by luxury and an army of henchmen. But he wasn’t aware that the Singing Blade had plans for him.
