During the War of the Third Coalition, the French Army engaged in a series of battles and manoeuvres in the area surrounding the city of Ulm, attempting to outflank a large Austrian army of 60.000 troops before they managed to receive reinforcements from the Russians.
Using rapid marching, Napoleon successfully encircled and captured the Austrians, which in turn left the road open to capture Vienna, paving the way to the decisive battle of the war, Austerlitz, which put an end to the War of the Third Coalition.
Dragoons were a special type of mounted troops. Unlike the other cavalry regiments, they did not fight on horseback on the battlefield. Instead, they rode to their position to dismount and fight as infantry. In a war of high mobility, this type of troop had obvious advantages.
Our bust portrays a trooper of the 2nd Regiment, just dismounted and armed with an infantry musket.
