The small island of Arwad, on the coast of Syria, was the last territory under Crusader control in the Holy Land. After the fall of Acre in 1291, the Kingdom of Jerusalem relocated to Cyprus, and Pope Clement V awarded the Templars the formal ownership of this island, trying to maintain at least a small foothold in the area.

The island had a small port and a castle, and its garrison consisted of a bit more than a hundred knights with an additional detachment of archers and servants, under the command of Maréchal Barthélemy de Quincy.

Since the siege of Acre, the Mamluks had started to take control of Syria, and they were not going to leave the strategic enclave in the hands of the Crusaders. They landed on the island with a highly superior force and laid siege to the fortification. After a lengthy fight, the Templars surrendered in exchange for a promise of safe passage, which was ultimately broken by the Mamluks. The bowmen and servants were executed, and the knights were sent to Cairo as captives.

Our figure depicts a member of a militant order on the eve of the XIV century, and can be used to portray any similar subject of choice.
