Rollo was a Viking leader who became the first Duke of Normandy, founding a dynasty that ultimately would become the reigning family in England.
Not too much is known about historical Rollo. The first mention of him refers to 885, during the reign of Charles the Fat, when Paris was attacked by a large force of Danish warriors. A contingent of those Viking raiders was led by Rollo, also known as Göngu-Hrólf that means, “Hrólf the Walker”. It is generally accepted that he earned this nickname because he was so physically imposing that no horse could carry him and thus, was forced to travel on foot.
After an alliance with the Frankish king Charles III, he was given the city of Rouen and the lands around it, roughly what it is today Normandy. His descendants were known as the Normans, fierce warriors that even managed to conquest England through the campaign of William I and establish themselves in that country as rulers.
Our bust portrays a possible composition of this Viking Warlord, including key elements like the sword and Danish long axe, the round shield and an optional helmet with both nasal and mask alternatives.
